After two seasons of never losing a race, the last thing I expected was to have my race car taken away from me. However, that's exactly what happened. It was 2016. At the time, I had successfully raced a 2006 Honda Civic Si with a two liter K20Z3 engine (pictured above) and earned two back-to-back SCCA National Championships. Having put two years of blood, sweat, and tears into making the car fast and efficient, I was ready for a change.
I began to brainstorm. Change the engine. Put in a K24A2 with a K20Z3 head to increase power. Make the car faster--and move from the SCCA STL class to the faster, more prestigious SCCA STU class. By pushing myself to make the car better, I would also force myself to step up and compete in a class that would further develop my skills as a driver. I began to plan. My company gives us a space to work, access to some tools and parts, and usually a vehicle, but the rest is up to us. At the end of the day, if you want it, you have to build it yourself. If you're missing something, you have to find or source it yourself. I was ready for the challenge. Then, it happened. My race car was on loan--and it was reallocated to someone else. Suddenly, the 2017 race season was looming--and I didn't have a ride. What was I going to do? Spoiler alert: I can only control myself, so I did what anyone else would have done--started a new plan. Little did I know, what was about to happen next would change everything. More on that in Part 2, with the story being told in Super Street Magazine. |
