When I was coming up through the ranks as a driver, I had access to all the data I could ever need. I analyzed it, yet, I kept hitting the same walls. What I lacked wasn’t more information; it was a mentor who had actually been in the seat to translate that data into action. I eventually got to where I needed to be, but it took years of trial and error. I took the long way around. If you’re serious about getting faster, here is why data alone will only take you so far—and why having the right coach changes everything. 1. Data Tells You What, Not How
Data is fantastic at pointing out the obvious: "You’re braking 20 feet too early into Turn 3." Knowing that is one thing; feeling how to fix it is another. Data can’t tell you how to loosen your grip on the wheel, adjust your weight transfer on entry, or build the confidence to trail-brake deeper. A coach bridges the gap between raw numbers and driver intuition. 2. Shortcutting the Learning Curve Motorsport is expensive—in time, money, and wear-and-tear on your equipment. Taking "the long way around" means burning through sets of tires and track days trying to figure out why a lap time won't drop. An experienced driver sitting in the passenger seat or reviewing video with you can spot a bad habit in two laps that might otherwise take you a season to break. 3. The Mental Game & Racecraft Squiggly lines don't capture the pressure of a qualifying lap, the dynamic of passing in traffic, or how to communicate setup feedback to an engineer. Coaching goes beyond corner speeds—it’s about developing your racecraft, focus, and adaptability when conditions change. Why I Coach Looking back, I built my career by making every mistake in the book before figuring out what worked. Coaching gives me the chance to pay it forward—to be the advocate and mentor I wish I had in my corner when I was grinding to get faster. Plus, helping another driver find those missing tenths? Honestly, it’s just plain fun. Ready to find your next second? Whether you want in-car coaching, data analysis, or pre-race prep, let's get you on the fast track. Reach out here to book a session. |
